The Story Behind our Green Glaze
Share
Every piece that leaves the LaLongia Ceramics studio carries a little of the regional landscape we live in and love. The deep green glaze that defines our current collection didn't arrive overnight — it evolved through months of testing, firing, and quiet observation. And a lot of help from Melbourne Clay guru Ilona Topolcsanyi.
Where the Colour Comes From
Green in ceramics is a conversation between chemistry and heat. Our deep green is achieved through a combination of iron and copper oxides suspended in a glossy base glaze, fired to stoneware temperatures. Each firing brings subtle variation — a slightly deeper tone here, a warmer edge there — which is part of what makes every piece genuinely/totally one of a kind.
Handmade Means No Two Are the Same
All of our bowls and platters are wheel-thrown by hand in on the VIC/NSW border town of Barooga. The form created is a multi-step process; raw/reclaimed clay, trimming, air dry, bisque firing, dipped in glaze, final firing. When the glaze is applied and the kiln fires, that touch is locked in permanently. What you receive is not a reproduction. It is the original.
Designed for the Table
We make functional ceramics — pieces intended to be used, not displayed behind glass. The deep green collection was designed with the rhythm of everyday life in mind: a bowl for a shared salad, a platter for bread and cheese, a surface that makes simple food feel considered. Stoneware is durable, food-safe, and dishwasher safe, so these pieces are genuinely built for daily use.
Caring for Your Piece
Handmade stoneware is robust, but sensible care goes a long way. We recommend avoiding sudden temperature changes (don't move straight from freezer to hot oven), and while our pieces are dishwasher safe, hand washing will preserve the glaze surface over time.
If you have questions about a piece, or would like to know more about the making process, we'd love to hear from you.
